Mierlo / The Netherlands November 8, 2018 — Since 2009 GNT has presented students with extraordinary achievements in the field of food science with the GNT Young Scientist Award. In doing so, GNT offers the next generation of thinkers the opportunity to showcase their talent and potential to an academic and industrial audience. The GNT Young Scientist award encourages scientists to engage in the examination of pioneering approaches applicable to fruit and vegetable processing and innovative use of colorimetric analysis.

At the 32nd EFFoST international conference in Nantes, France, GNT once again recognized students who have made exceptional contributions to the field of food science. The selection committee headed by Marcus Volkert, application and development manager at GNT, picked the award recipients based on their scientific abstracts and conference presentations. The criteria for selection included scientific excellence, an innovative approach of the presented work, and most importantly, a thematic relevance to issues/solutions applicable to the manufacturing of Coloring Foods.

Many original topics were submitted, but the award committee could select only three winners. Despite varying subject matter, each recipient’s research demonstrated outstanding usage of scientific ingenuity in developing creative solutions to present and future food industry challenges.

The winners are as follows:

Third Place: Vera Schmid, “Influence of Extrusions Processing on the Functional Properties of Chokeberry Pomace

Second Place: Dimitris Karefyllaksi, “Emulsification Ability of Multicomponent Fractions from Sunflower Seeds

First Place: Leandro Buchmann, “Nanosecond Pulsed Electric Field Characterization for Tailored Microalgae Processing

GNT takes the same approach to manufacturing EXBERRY® Coloring Foods, relying on both innovative processes to create ingredient solutions that are functional and desirable. GNT is proud to highlight the accomplishments of the next generation’s brightest young minds. Congratulations to all the participants and winners.
